7 tools to track competitors in AI search, and how to choose one

An AI answer with a brand mention, recommendation and source citation shown as separate signals.

Your competitor appears in an AI answer. Your company does not. Before buying a tracking tool, you need to know what happened: was the competitor recommended in the answer, mentioned in passing, or simply linked as a source?

Those are different signals. A useful competitor AI search tracker preserves the answer and its sources, tells you when and where it checked, and helps you decide what to do next. A score without that evidence is hard to act on.

This guide compares seven options by the work they support. We make outwrite.ai, which is included below. Competitor descriptions are based on their public product documentation, not a hands-on benchmark or a claim that we tested every plan. Check current engine coverage and allowances before buying.

Seven tools, seven different reasons to shortlist them

    1. outwrite.ai: turn the findings into planned content

outwrite.ai is built for owners and small teams who also need the writing done. You start with your website. Research informs a content plan, articles are prepared with supporting sources, and a connected publishing destination can receive them on your chosen schedule.

Results separates brand mentions, recommendations and citations in sampled answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. Monitoring normally runs roughly weekly, with a consistent baseline and additional relevant prompts. It is not a live feed of every conversation about your market.

The plan is $99 per month, with a seven-day trial and no credit card required. Check the Results documentation and current plan. Choose this route when your main question is “what should we publish next?” A team needing extensive custom monitoring across other engines should compare coverage carefully.

    2. Peec AI: investigate prompt-level brand presence

Peec AI focuses on visibility, position and sentiment across AI search, with prompt organization and country-specific analysis. It also presents actions alongside analysis. Shortlist it when someone on your team will regularly investigate how answers describe your company and competitors.

Bring your own buying questions to the demo. Ask to open an underlying answer, change the country, and explain how the aggregate score changed. That exercise is more useful than comparing attractive dashboard screenshots.

    3. Profound: analysis and a broader agent workflow

Profound offers Answer Engine Insights alongside products including Prompt Volumes, Agent Analytics and Agents. Its scope extends beyond a mention dashboard. Consider it when several people need to research visibility and coordinate subsequent work.

Write down which of those jobs you actually need, then ask for the corresponding package and implementation requirements. A broad product catalog does not mean every capability is available in every subscription.

    4. Otterly.AI: a focused monitoring shortlist

Otterly.AI combines prompt research, brand monitoring and source analysis across supported AI search surfaces. It is worth evaluating when you already have a content process and want a repeatable way to inspect visibility.

Test a category prompt, an alternatives prompt and a specific purchase constraint. Check whether the report makes it easy to tell a recommendation from a source link, and whether you can retain the evidence for a client or internal report.

    5. Scrunch: visibility and how AI encounters your site

Scrunch covers AI search monitoring, sources and competitors, alongside AI traffic analysis and its Agent Experience Platform. That makes it a candidate when you want to investigate both answer visibility and the experience AI systems have with your website.

Ask which proposed changes require developers or changes to your delivery stack. Include that work in your evaluation, rather than comparing subscription prices alone.

    6. Ahrefs Brand Radar: separate index research from your own checks

Brand Radar offers an AI visibility index and custom prompt tracking. These answer different questions: an existing index can help you explore a market, while a defined prompt set can support repeat comparisons.

Keep those sources separate in your reporting. A change in the indexed sample is not automatically a change in performance on the exact buyer questions you track. Neither source gives you access to people's private chats.

    7. Semrush: investigate AI gaps alongside SEO work

Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit includes competitor research and prompt tracking, with reporting integrations. It belongs on the shortlist if your team already uses Semrush for SEO and wants to investigate both forms of visibility in a familiar workflow.

Check which reports use the provider's broader prompt database and which use your saved prompts. Ask for the cost of the engine, market and checking frequency you intend to maintain.

A comparison method you can reuse

For a small pilot, choose ten to twenty buying questions across three decisions: choosing a category, comparing alternatives, and finding a solution for a specific constraint. This is a suggested evaluation sample, not a statistically representative survey.

    1. Keep a baseline. Save the prompt wording, market, language, engine and check date. Use the same settings when comparing tools.
    2. Read the answer. Record a brand mention separately from an explicit recommendation.
    3. Record the source. Keep the cited URL and whether it belongs to you, a competitor or a third party.
    4. Inspect the destination. A competitor's useful comparison page suggests a different action from a directory citation.
    5. Choose an action. Improve an existing page, create a missing resource, correct public information, or investigate a relevant third-party listing.

For example, a competitor might be recommended while a neutral publisher supplies the supporting link. Publishing a copy of the competitor's homepage would not address that pattern. You may need a clearer comparison page, better evidence about your product, or accurate information on that publisher's site.

Report coverage before celebrating a percentage

Suppose your brand is mentioned in 8 of 20 completed checks. That is a 40% mention rate for that sample. If four additional checks failed, show those failures separately; do not count them as absent mentions. If you add twenty new prompts next week, report the original group separately so the comparison remains understandable.

A citation is not a visit, and a visit is not a sale. Use site analytics and conversion records alongside answer samples. If your current bottleneck is deciding what to write, our tracking versus content automation guide can help you choose where to spend first.

    What changed in this comparison

This guide now concentrates on products with explicit AI visibility capabilities. Audience research, question discovery and traditional rank tracking can still help an SEO program, but they should not be presented as equivalent evidence of what an AI answer recommends. Start with the decision you want to improve

Choose a tool that lets you explain a result and act on it. If you want the research to feed a content plan, try outwrite.ai for seven days. Start with your URL, inspect the proposed work, and connect publishing when you are ready. No tool can promise that an AI system will recommend your business.
